Why is Trauma-Informed Care in Nutrition so Important?
Have you encountered times when a client seems inexplicably stuck and struggling to change their eating habits, despite trying your best to “meet them where they are”? Have you noticed some clients having really strong reactions or completely shutting down when you are trying to offer suggestions? You might have found yourself wondering if they have a trauma history, and you’re not sure it you have the skills to support them effectively or safely. As a dietitian, you likely already understand how your job is about so much more than food and nutrients. There are so many factors that influence your clients’ food choices and eating habits. Some of those things are obvious and easy to address… others are more complex and nuanced. Even after completing trainings on counselling skills for behaviour change, sometimes it’s hard to support folks who struggle to let go of unhelpful habits. This course serves as a bridge into understanding how a client’s past adverse experiences might be showing up in surprising ways, such as disordered eating behaviours and body image distress.
What is Safer Care?
Creating a safer space for your clients means providing a physically and emotionally safe environment for them to access care. It also involves seeking to understand their lived experience with curiosity and compassion so you can better support them in a collaborative way. Although it can feel easy to claim a space as safe, it is always up to your each of your clients to decide when and where they feel safe.

Who You'll Learn From
Hi, I’m Angela Tucker. Dietitian of over 12 years, and Trauma Therapist of over 4 years. As a Dietitian, I’ve worked in several different areas of nutrition care. From long term care, to chronic disease education, to community nutrition, to private practice. Through all of these diverse roles, one thing that has been consistent is the integration of trauma-informed care and counselling skills. And while doing this work, I recognized this is a critical gap in Dietitian education and professional development. This course serves to fill that gap by integrating my experience as a Dietitian with my knowledge as a trauma Therapist to support you in transforming the way you work with clients. I am passionate about helping Dietitians gain skills in trauma-informed care so we can collectively create safer spaces for our clients and communities, and I am excited for you to join me. My education includes a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutritional Science and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology.

FAQ
"When does the course open?" October 14, 2026! "How much time do I have to complete the course?" You have 2 years of access to the course and monthly Q&A sessions. This includes anything added to the course during this time. "Why the limited time?" I take trauma-informed care really, really seriously. And I want you to take it really, really seriously, too. Often, learning opportunities without a time limit can take a backseat and become low priority. I don’t want that to happen with this course! I want you to make the most of this knowledge so you can integrate what you learn with your clients. And, I also want you to have enough time to learn at your own pace, without feeling rushed. As part of the course you will also have access to detailed slides that you can download and refer back to for as long as you like. "What are the monthly group Q&A sessions for?" The Q&A sessions are for you to bring up any cases, challenges or questions that come up for you as you practice Trauma-Informed Nutrition Care. I consider this to be the most important part of the training. Trauma-informed care is not only about learning the material and skills, it is also about having support and access to consultation as you integrate the knowledge into your practice. "Will this course teach me about Polyvagal Theory?" While Polyvagal Theory is a popular framework to understand the autonomic nervous system, it faces criticism and is generally not considered evidence-based. This training uses more widely accepted ways of conceptualizing the role of emotions and the autonomic nervous system in eating behaviours and mental health. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12937499/ "I’m a newer dietitian, would this course still be helpful for me?" Absolutely! I think the earlier we learn about trauma-informed practice, the better! "I’ve been a dietitian for a long time, will I still benefit from this type of training?" For sure! Trauma-informed care is something that applies at any stage of a dietitian’s career. "Will trauma-informed care be relevant for the area of dietetics I work in?" That is really for you to decide. But as someone who’s worked in most areas of dietetics, I have found trauma-informed care to apply in all areas. Some populations are at a higher risk for trauma than others, but as long as you’re working with people, you’re going to encounter folks impacted by trauma. "Do I need to follow a certain order for the modules?" The modules intentionally build on one another, but if you’re super excited about a certain one, you are welcome to complete the modules in whatever order you prefer. "Do you offer a group rate?" Yes! Individuals belonging to groups of 3 or more get 20% off. Email me at [email protected] and I will set it up for you. "Can I do a payment plan?" Yes! Email me at [email protected] to inquire.
